Seung-Ho Paik’s Birmingham City have dropped from England’s second tier to the third.
Birmingham City won 1-0 against Norwich City in the 46th round of the 2023-2024 English Championship (2nd Division) on Thursday (KST). This was the final round of the season. The match resulted in Birmingham’s relegation to the Third Division.
Going into the final round, Birmingham City were 22nd in the relegation zone. They needed to knock off one of 19th-place Blackburn Rovers, 20th-place Sheffield Wednesday, or 21st-place Plymouth to stay up. Blackburn and Sheffield are three points ahead of Birmingham on the table, but are equal or worse on goal difference. Plymouth were just one point behind Birmingham on goal difference. Self-retention was not possible, but Birmingham could survive if they won and only one of their three rivals playing at the same time lost.
Birmingham accomplished the bare minimum, with Seung-Ho Baek leading the way. Baek was deployed as an attacking midfielder on the day. It was a surprise move for Birmingham, who were looking for a must-win as he usually plays as a defensive midfielder. It paid off. Baek Seung-ho scored a goal 10 minutes into the second half to give his team the lead.
Birmingham took Baek off early in the second half in the 23rd minute to try and stabilize the game and eventually hold on 먹튀검증 for the win.
The problem was that Birmingham only needed one of the three teams to lose, and they all won to share the ‘relegation rope’. Blackburn won 2-0 against Leicester City, who had already clinched the title and came out flat. Sheffield beat Sunderland 2-0. Plymouth won 1-0 against Hull City.
Baek Seung-ho started his career in Europe, playing in Spain and Germany before making his K League debut in the late 1990s, where he was a consistent performer for Jeonbuk Hyundai. He even scored a goal for his country at the World Cup. Determined to return to Europe, Baek Seung-ho joined Birmingham in the winter transfer window this season and quickly established himself in the first team, but the club’s drop to the third tier forced him to seek a move.
